Hihiaua Cultural Centre

Moller Architects have recently completed the concept design for a new cultural centre for the Hihiaua Trust located in Whangarei. The project consists of a controlled environment display space for artifacts, arts and craft and carving, a multi use conference centre & theatre complex, and a workshop for waka carving. The three functional areas are grouped around a central arrival space. This space also includes a café & eating area, ticketing and a retail shop with access to common service areas. The space allows for formal occasions to be welcomed onto the site. The centre is to provide for cultural as well as educational facilities for Whangarei and the Northland Region. The project has been designed in close collaboration with the Hihiaua Trustees. An integrated landscape design proposal has been carried out by Boffa Miskell Landscape Architects for the immediate site surrounds as well as the wider site. The materials are masonry walls and roof for the display areas, with lightweight framed walls and roof for the arrival and conference areas clad in glass and cedar timber weatherboards. The existing boatshed on site isto refurbished to house the Waka carving areas and linked into the new building complex.

Majlis Oman Project

Moller Architects recently visited the Majlis Oman Project site in Muscat. Construction has commenced with the establishment of the contractor Carillion on site.The bulk excavation is complete, the construction of the foundations and basement slab are underway.

Queens Wharf Competition

Moller Architects were recently shortlisted as part of the consortium Tasman Studio to participate in the second stage of the Queens Wharf competition. Tasman Studio (comprising of Moller Architects, Warren & Mahoney Architects, Boffa Miskell Landscape Architects and Beca Engineers) were successful in being selected as one of three team submissions, as well as one of five design ideas selected, to progress to the second stage. The competition is due for submission on 23rd October with the announcement of the winner in mid November.

TV Tower, Wuxi, China

Moller Architects recently participated in an invited competition for a new tower in Wuxi, China. The brief was for a tower to replace an existing facility located on the site. The tower is primarily for communications for the local TV station, with tourist facilities at the base of the tower and at the observation level at the top. The site is located on top of a hill which looks out over Wuxi, a city of 4.2 million people. Moller Architects were one of three participants shortlisted to present design options for the client. The perspective below is an image of one of three options by Moller Architects. The tower is 200 metres tall constructed out of a tubular steel diagrid with a diaphanous glazed wall behind the structure.

Shortland Street Tower, Auckland

Moller Architects are proceeding with documentation for a new tower in Shortland Street. The 28 level office tower development comprises of commercial office space designed to 5 star ESD rating in the podium and tower block. There is abundant natural light, flexible floor planning options and a selection of high quality materials and finishes.
The 12 metre high Plaza level at the Shortland Street level incorporates the atrium and entry foyer and connects to the Fort Street frontage. This creates a major public space and provides a significant enhancement of the urban environment by celebrating a significant city view shaft from O’Connell Street towards Commerce Street and the waterfront beyond. This view shaft will be enhanced with a significant artwork installation.

Marine Events Centre

Moller Architects are proceeding with documentation for the Marine Events Centre. The proposed building is located in the heart of the Viaduct Harbour. It is a multi-purpose building for events such as the Boat Show, Fashion Shows, corporate events and waterfront activity.

The building is 6,000m² over three levels opening onto the Halsey St Wharf on all sides. The upper levels provide a variety of break out and conference spaces. The building has an evocative wave form roof which provides column free flexible spaces for a variety of uses.

A cafe is located at ground level opening onto the wharf and gateway plaza. A public ramp gives access to a viewing platform at the north end for observation of the activities on the water and adjacent wharves and waterfront spaces.

Ormiston Road Bridge

The Ormiston Road Bridge was recently opened by Len Brown, the Mayor of Manukau City Council. The bridge was designed as a collaboration between Moller Architects and the principal consultant Beca. It is the first cable stay traffic bridge in New Zealand. The bridge forms an important gateway to the new town centre of Flatbush and acts as an important element in the landscape. It connects the two sides of Flatbush together as well as allowing for the continuity of Barry Curtis Park to flow below the bridge uninterrupted by the bridge traffic above.

Pounui Ridge, Wairarapa

Moller Architects were awarded a NZIA Branch Award for the house at Pounui Ridge in the Wairarapa as part of the New Zealand Institute of Architects awards program.
The house is situated on a south facing slope with extensive views out over the landscape toward Lake Ferry and the Wairarapa Coast beyond. The form of the house responds to the contour of the natural environment with a promenade gallery which curves along the hillside. The entry courtyard bisects the promenade with living, kitchen and dining areas to the east with bedrooms and bathrooms suites to the west. The roof forms of the primary living areas float above to capture the north light and to acknowledge the presence of the house on arrival. The study, garage and service spaces are tucked into the slope of the hill with turf roofs partially burying the house into the land.

The materials are white painted off the boxing insitu concrete walls with natural timber over a steel frame. Polished concrete floors, white walls and ceramics provide a dramatic interior for paintings, sculptures and personal expression.


Living Room

Orua Bay, Auckland

Moller Architects were awarded a NZIA Branch Award for the house at Orua Bay as part of the New Zealand Institute of Architects awards program. The house is a two level holiday retreat comprising of living, kitchen and dining with two bedrooms and bathrooms above. A self contained third bedroom is situated over the garage. The house faces towards the Manukau Harbour with extensive glazing to maximize view and winter sun. The house is steel framed with vertical cedar board cladding.

Majlis Oman Project, Muscat, Oman

Moller Architects recently won an international competition to design the new parliament buildings in Muscat Oman. The project is a 45,000m² complex consisting of Majlis Oman (the main assembly chamber), Majlis A’Shura (the lower house) and Majlis A’Ddawla (the upper house). Construction is due to commence on site early 2009 with a completion date in early 2012. Moller Architects are currently developing the design of the competition winning scheme in Auckland and in Muscat, Oman.

Elliott Tower, Auckland

Elliott Tower recently obtained a Resource Consent from Auckland City. The project is a 65 storey residential tower on the site bounded by Elliott St, Victoria St and Albert Street. The project comprises of a 3 level podium of retail over a basement carpark and a residential tower above. The tower is further articulated into three zones with sky gardens between each zone. Moller Architects are currently developing the design to proceed to the next phase of the project.

New Years Day Honour

Gordon Moller was awarded an ONZM in the 2008 New Years Day honours list for services to architecture. This recognises his extensive contribution to architecture both as a practicing architect and his long involvement in the affairs of the architectural profession in NZ.
